The argan tree is an old species, found in the southwest area of Morocco, where it has adapted to the harsh and dry conditions found there. The tree is actually protected by UNESCO as it now only covers a small area, although it was once widespread over the whole of North Africa. Argan oil is actually one of the most valuable and scarcest oils in the world, because the tree is found in such a small area and because only a liter of oil can be taken from one tree every season. The oil is produced from the seeds of the tree.
Processing
The oil is collected by the modern process of solvent extraction or similar methods and the seeds are collected directly from the tree. It is all certainly a lot different from times past when the argan pits would be collected by local Berber tribesmen from the waste of goats that had eaten the fruit.
Commercial Control Of The Oil
To ensure that the supply of oil does not run out, a reforestation pan has been implemented, which also helps to sustain income. A women;s cooperative is actually responsible for producing the entire stock of argan oil and the revenues generated are shared with Berber women. The cooperative has helped over 3 million local people in some capacity, and the locals have benefited from improvements in education and health care because of the profits from the oil.
Choosing A Product
Cheaper oil is often added to the product, simply because it is so rare and hard to come by. Pure oil becomes semi solid at a temperature of around 2 degrees C, while if you keep it in the fridge, it will remain translucent and in a liquid form. Not surprisingly, pure oil costs a bit more, although even a small amount will last a long time.
Some oil is Ecocert certified and you can find companies online that sell this pure product, although you may have to shop around a little. For centuries, the Berber people of Morocco have realized that here is something special about this oil; now you too can reap the benefits.
