How to Pack an Internal Frame Pack for Backpacking

Failing to pack a backpack properly before hitting the trail-head can result in an uncomfortable and/or dangerous trip. I recommend packing the night before and balancing the weight as well as possible. Be sure to consider the order within which most items will be needed. Put the sleeping items (sleeping bag, sleeping clothes, etc.) in a stuff sack towards the bottom of the pack. This will help to better ensure that they will remain dry throughout the hike. Ensure that drawstrings attached to a tent, sleeping pad, backpacking chair, etc. are all tucked securely within their stuff sacks. Also ensure that the items are lashed tightly beneath the pack. Loose items can snag easily on branches or vines while hiking. They can also affect balance, which can be hazardous while traversing cliffs, water crossings and other dangerous terrain. Place cooking gear, food, etc. on top of the sleeping gear. Place beverages, snack and items that will be more frequently accessed during the hike towards the top of the pack. Use the side pockets on the backpack for snacks, etc. that are picked up at a gas station on the way to the trail-head. Also keep matches, lighters and some fire starting material in a zip-lock bag. The worst thing ever is encountering rain and/or falling in a creek and being unable to start a campfire before dark.
