Maheen's Mehndi & Pithi: Blessings for the Bride

Bride's Pithi

The bride enters with her mother, covering both of their heads with the traditional wedding shawl. She sits over the pre-prepared chair, under which is the Hindu symbol for good fortune (called a "svastika").

The symbol is drawn with colored rice. Beetle nuts are used to create the four dots, one in each quadrant of the symbol, which represent the four original races of mankind. Each race is equally represented in the symbol, representing their equality and joint sharing of the resources of Mother Earth.

The pithi begins with the bride's closest family offering her their blessings, followed by more distant family and friends. We encourage you to take part. Here's how...

At your turn, greet the bride and congratulate her. Then give her your blessings by doing any or all of the following: 1. Feed her candy (To wish her sweetness in life.)
2. Throw rice over her three times (To wish her abundance and bounty of nature.)
3. Give her an envelope with a few dollars in it (To wish her wealth and prosperity)
4. Rub oil on her hair (To wish her beauty and radiance on her wedding day)
5. Dot her forehead with saffron (To acknowledge the auspiciousness of the occasion)
6. Rub tumeric paste on her arms, neck or face (To giver her soft and radiant skin on her wedding day)
7. Touch your knuckles to either side of her head, then place them on either side of your own forehead and crack them against your head (To wish her good luck and dispel any evil spirits around her)

When everybody has finished offering their blessings to the bride, she will stand on her chair, and then step down, breaking a "sapatia", which is a small clay pot containing lentils (symbolizing bounty of nature), silver coins (symbolizing material wealth), sugar (symbolizing sweetness and harmony), and turmeric (symbolizing good health). By breaking the sapatia, she releases the gifts that it contains.
